Initiative “4 pour 1000” - Arona Diedhiou - IRD - Afrique

1er septembre 2022

In Bali, snakefruit farmers hope agroforestry bears fruit as island reopens

* Sibetan village on the Indonesian island of Bali is renowned for its organic snakefruit, known locally as salak.

* But following each biannual harvest, farmers face plunging prices of the salak fruit due to oversupply.

* Salak farmer Made Surjani says visitors are welcome to view local agroforestry practices, but that Sibetan farmers see themselves as farmers first and foremost.

Soil - Soil microbiomes - One health

Soil microbiomes and one health - Samiran Banerjee & Marcel G. A. van der Heijden

The concept of one health highlights that human health is not isolated but connected to the health of animals, plants and environments. In this Review, we demonstrate that soils are a cornerstone of one health and serve as a source and reservoir of pathogens, beneficial microorganisms and the overall microbial diversity in a wide range of organisms and ecosystems. We list more than 40 soil microbiome functions that either directly or indirectly contribute to soil, plant, animal and human health. We identify microorganisms that are shared between different one health compartments and show that soil, plant and human microbiomes are perhaps more interconnected than previously thought. Our Review further evaluates soil microbial contributions to one health in the light of dysbiosis and global change and demonstrates that microbial diversity is generally positively associated with one health. Finally, we present future challenges in one health research and formulate recommendations for practice and evaluation.

Specific effects of tree species on soil carbon sequestration in a rice-tree association mesocosm experiment: Evidence from natural 13C abundance

By Rasoarinaivo A.R., Razafimbelo T.M., Blanchart E., Chapuis-Lardy L., Chevallier T., Bouillet J.P., Trap J.. 2022.

Within agroforestry systems, trees greatly contribute to soil carbon (C) sequestration. We still know little about how this contribution varies according to tree species. Here, we quantified the soil C content derived from three main tree species, Eucalyptus robusta, Coffea arabica and Citrus clementina, used in rainfed rice-based agroforestry in the Highlands of Madagascar. A fully factorial controlled mesocosm experiment was performed, with seedlings of the tree species planted with or without rice in a Ferralsol. The natural 13C abundance in the soil was measured to assess tree- and rice-derived C. One year after planting, Eucalyptus robusta was the species exhibiting the highest tree-derived C values, with 148 g C m-2 on average. In contrast, Citrus clementina transferred only 12 g C m-2 to the soil. No significant contribution of Coffea arabica to the soil C stock was found. The presence of rice affected neither the growth of tree seedlings nor their abilities to provide C to the soil. The difference in soil C sequestration among tree species was significantly correlated with differential root biomass. Tree root biomass was significantly correlated with soil d13C. This experimental assay highlighted the contrasting contributions of tree species to ecological processes such as soil C sequestration at the early stage of agroforestry establishment. Further studies considering tree density and spatial arrangement should be conducted under field conditions to gain further insights into tree contributions to soil C sequestration in agroforestry systems.

Regenerative agriculture in Mexico boosts yields while restoring nature

* Chiapas is Mexico’s second-most biodiverse state and provides 30% of the country’s freshwater, but has lost 55% of its forests for farmland and livestock pasture.

* Now, an unlikely alliance of conservationists, farmers and cattle ranchers is working to incorporate 2.5 million hectares (6.2 million acres) of land into sustainable management schemes, focusing on soil health and aiming to restore and reforest 1.4 million hectares (3.5 million acres).

* The initiative intends to restore soil health and in the process store carbon, free up more land for conservation, and maintain jobs in rural areas.

Farmer-to-farmer agroecology: Q&A with Chukki Nanjundaswamy of Amrita Bhoomi Learning Centre.

* The Amrita Bhoomi Learning Centre in southern India is one of dozens of education hubs around the world providing a space for farmer-to-farmer training in agroecology.

* In a wide-ranging interview with Mongabay, the center’s Chukki Nanjundaswamy discusses their model of agriculture, its Gandhian roots, and how it grew out of the rejection of Green Revolution farming techniques that rely on chemical inputs and expensive hybrid seeds.

* Nanjundaswamy shares some of their innovative approaches to growing food without inputs, plus clever techniques to thwart notorious pests like fall armyworm, which is also prevalent in Africa.

Regenerative farming - Soil - Prince Charles

August 4, 2022

Regenerative farming is the future, says Prince Charles.

Moves toward a more regenerative style of farming in the UK have received a warm endorsement from the Prince of Wales, who said failure to address some of the issues associated with industrialised agriculture was “too grim to contemplate”.

Addressing the 22nd World Congress of Soil Science in Glasgow on Thursday (4 August), Prince Charles described soil as an asset that was all too easily “overlooked, degraded and polluted”.

Routes to roots: direct evidence of water transport by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to host plants

Summary

* Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can help mitigate plant responses to water stress, but it is unclear whether AMF do so by indirect mechanisms, direct water transport to roots, or a combination of the two. Here, we investigated if and how the AMF Rhizophagus intraradices transported water to the host plant Avena barbata, wild oat.

* We used two-compartment microcosms, isotopically labeled water, and a fluorescent dye to directly track and quantify water transport by AMF across an air gap to host plants.

* Plants grown with AMF that had access to a physically separated compartment containing 18O-labeled water transpired almost twice as much as plants with AMF excluded from that compartment. Using an isotopic mixing model, we estimated that water transported by AMF across the air gap accounted for 34.6% of the water transpired by host plants. In addition, a fluorescent dye indicated that hyphae were able to transport some water via an extracytoplasmic pathway.

* Our study provides direct evidence that AMF can act as extensions of the root system along the soil–plant–air continuum of water movement, with plant transpiration driving water flow along hyphae outside of the hyphal cell membrane.
