Intentional creation of carbon-rich dark earth soils in the Amazon - by M.J. Schmidt and all

Fertile soil known as Amazonian dark earth is central to the debate over the size and ecological impact of ancient human populations in the Amazon. Dark earth is typically associated with human occupation, but it is uncertain whether it was created intentionally. Dark earth may also be a substantial carbon sink, but its spatial extent and carbon inventory are unknown. We demonstrate spatial and compositional similarities between ancient and modern dark earth and document modern Indigenous practices that enrich soil, which we use to propose a model for the formation of ancient dark earth. This comparison suggests that ancient Amazonians managed soil to improve fertility and increase crop productivity. These practices also sequestered and stored carbon in the soil for centuries, and we show that some ancient sites contain as much carbon as the above-ground rainforest biomass. Our results demonstrate the intentional creation of dark earth and highlight the value of Indigenous knowledge for sustainable rainforest management.

Nature as a critical climate solution: Busting the myths around nature-based solutions Nature4Climate has published a new paper that busts the most-frequently cited myths around nature-based solutions. We know that nature is a critical climate solution, but high levels of misinformation is discrediting viable solutions and drastically slowing or even halting action. Here, we aim to help overcome prevailing misconceptions and promote an "and-and" narrative, the urgency of which has been highlighted by the recent Global Stocktake Assessment Report.  This resource is a must read for anyone looking for the facts on nature-based solutions.

Agroecology - Mineral fertilizer - Sub-Saharan Africa - Research

September 13, 2023

The input reduction principle of agroecology is wrong when it comes to mineral fertilizer use in sub-Saharan Africa - by Gatien N Falconnier, Rémi Cardinael, Marc Corbeels, Frédéric Baudron, Pauline Chivenge, Antoine Couëdel, Aude Ripoche, François Affholder, Krishna Naudin, Emilie Benaillon, Leonard Rusinamhodzi, Louise Leroux, Bernard Vanlauwe, and Ken E Giller

Can farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) boost crop yields and improve food availability without using more mineral fertilizer? This question has been at the center of lively debates among the civil society, policy-makers, and in academic editorials. Proponents of the “yes” answer have put forward the “input reduction” principle of agroecology, i.e. by relying on agrobiodiversity, recycling and better efficiency, agroecological practices such as the use of legumes and manure can increase crop productivity without the need for more mineral fertilizer. We reviewed decades of scientific literature on nutrient balances in SSA, biological nitrogen fixation of tropical legumes, manure production and use in smallholder farming systems, and the environmental impact of mineral fertilizer. Our analyses show that more mineral fertilizer is needed in SSA for five reasons: (i) the starting point in SSA is that agricultural production is “agroecological” by default, that is, very low mineral fertilizer use, widespread mixed crop-livestock systems and large crop diversity including legumes, but leading to poor soil fertility as a result of widespread soil nutrient mining, (ii) the nitrogen needs of crops cannot be adequately met solely through biological nitrogen fixation by legumes and recycling of animal manure, (iii) other nutrients like phosphorus and potassium need to be replaced continuously, (iv) mineral fertilizers, if used appropriately, cause little harm to the environment, and (v) reducing the use of mineral fertilizers would hamper productivity gains and contribute indirectly to agricultural expansion and to deforestation. Yet, the agroecological principles directly related to soil fertility—recycling, efficiency, diversity—remain key in improving soil health and nutrient-use efficiency, and are critical to sustaining crop productivity in the long run. We argue for a nuanced position that acknowledges the critical need for more mineral fertilizers in SSA, in combination with the use of agroecological practices and adequate policy support.

March 2023

Emerging new global soil governance structure in agrifood systems: Taking the “4 per 1,000” initiative as an example - Li Li, Xiaojing Song, Yang Liu, Li Chai

Food systems emit 21%-37% of the global greenhouse gases (GHGs). Soil degradation, accelerated by global warming, poses a threat to over 40% of the land surfaces, threatening food security. Keeping soils alive and healthy could not only play a part in food security, but also in sequestrating GHGs for climate mitigation. In 2015, the “4 per 1,000” Initiative was launched in Paris COP21, indicating that a “4‰” annual growth rate of the soil organic carbon sequestration could hold the temperature increase within 1.5°C−2°C. However, major GHG emitting countries haven't signed the 4‰ Initiative at national level. Political willingness need to be encouraged though institutional innovations in the global soil governance (GSG). This article conducts a comprehensive policy review for the 4‰ Initiative and attempts to develop the concept of global soil governance from an aspect of New Common But Differentiated Responsibility. The SOC sink targets reveal that countries like China, India, the UK, the US, and France take more pains than those like Australia, Russia, and Canada. A new “soil carbon rich” and “soil carbon poor” divide is perceived, which needs to be taken into the GSG as a restructuring motivation for setting a more practical and integrated framework. In that sense, some developed countries face similar challenges as the developing countries do, but could contribute more in finance and technology. Bandwagon of applying sustainable agricultural land management (SALM) methodology in carbon markets implies that soil-climate co-benefits get greater practical momentum with quantified trading platforms, which may stimulate potentiality if embodied in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

* Food security across the Congo Basin is threatened by impoverished soils, climate change, and displacement due to armed conflict, forum attendees say.

* Governments in the region back improved seeds and synthetic fertilizer for small-scale farmers as well as large-scale agriculture projects to boost yields and revenue.

* AFSA argues these strategies cause more harm than good to both farmers and forests, and calls for a turn to agroecological methods instead.

Understanding how 1.5 °C pathways could adjust in light of new adverse information, such as a reduced 1.5 °C carbon budget, or slower-than-expected low-carbon technology deployment, is critical for planning resilient pathways. We use an integrated assessment model to explore potential pathway adjustments starting in 2025 and 2030, following the arrival of new information. The 1.5 °C target remains achievable in the model, in light of some adverse information, provided a broad portfolio of technologies and measures is still available. If multiple pieces of adverse information arrive simultaneously, average annual emissions reductions near 3 GtCO2/yr for the first five years following the pathway adjustment, compared to 2 GtCO2/yr in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic began. Moreover, in these scenarios of multiple simultaneous adverse information, by 2050 mitigation costs are 4-5 times as high as a no adverse information scenario, highlighting the criticality of developing a wide range of mitigation options, including energy demand reduction options.
