Healthy Soil Grows Healthy Food—and Stronger Economies
Greater biodiversity is the key to healthier soil. And healthier soil is the key to a range of environmental and economic benefits. Here’s how to achieve them.
* Soil biodiversity plays a critical role not just in the production of food but in maintaining clean fresh water, recharging groundwater reserves, and collecting and storing carbon.
* Soil needs sufficient water, healthy living organisms and plant residue, and the right temperature—all benefits associated with regenerative agriculture.
* Increasing the health of the soil in Germany, for example, would lead to upwards of €14 billion in economic benefits annually.
* All stakeholders must pay far more attention to the benefits of soil biodiversity and push for more research, supportive policies, and incentives.

22 septembre 2024

Nexus among climate change, food systems, and human health: An interdisciplinary research framework in the Global South - Sávio Marcelino Gomes and all.
This article unravels the intricate connections between climate change, food systems, and human health, offering a comprehensive exploration within a concise framework focused on the Global South. The contemporary crisis stemming from the mass production model, emphasising climate change and public health repercussions, is a focal point. We highlight food production as an important driver of climate change, significantly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Livestock and staple crops exert varied environmental impacts. We scrutinise the implications of land-use changes, emphasising the imperative to curtail agricultural expansion into forested areas. Central to our analysis is the role of governance systems. We advocate for a multi-level, polycentric governance approach integrating health considerations with ecology and socio-economic drivers. By exploring the nuances of gender, age, and ethnicity, we underscore the need for a climate transition guided by climate justice principles. Finally, we discuss methodological challenges in researching the complex nexus of food systems, climate change, and health. We navigate the limitations of disciplinary boundaries and traditional analytical methods, urging an interdisciplinary approach for a comprehensive understanding. Our work aims to contribute to a holistic perspective, informing policy-making and action to build a resilient and sustainable future, especially in the Global South.

Climate change exacerbates the environmental impacts of agriculture - Yang et al.
Modern agriculture has large global environmental impacts, from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to water and air pollution to biodiversity loss. It is widely expected that agriculture’s environmental impacts will escalate because a growing and richer global population will likely demand more agricultural products, including foods, feeds, fibers, and biofuels. Climate change, though less studied in this regard, is a second potential amplifier of agricultural environmental impacts. As climate change intensifies, it not only poses great risks to agricultural productivity, but its deviation from the relatively stable state under which modern agriculture evolved and has long operated also has profound implications for how agriculture interacts with the environment, and vice versa. In this Review, we present a synthesis of how climate change could amplify the environmental impacts of agriculture, from increases in GHG emissions, water use and scarcity, soil erosion, nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, pest outbreaks and pesticide use and pollution, and biodiversity loss. We discuss solutions to the challenges raised by how climate change could affect agricultural sustainability.

* Large human and livestock populations, over cultivation and overgrazing, the growing demand for fuelwood supplies and poor rangeland management are at the forefront of the environmental problem of human-made desertification in northern Cameroon.
* A project called EcoNorCam, which uses an agroecology method known as the Zai technique, aims to restore the soil around the Bénoué National Park.
* Farmers adopting the Zai method have seen a boom in their yield despite the hefty work involved.

How farms are using 'magic dust' to capture carbon
Ryan Nelson sprinkles tonnes of "magic dust" across his farm near Culross, Fife.
The dust is crushed basalt – volcanic rock which can be found in abundance in quarries across the country.
The magic comes from its ability to both capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and help crops grow through a process known as enhanced rock weathering.
The dust is being given to farmers for free by a company which hopes to remove millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Food systems currently accounting for about 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, 70% of freshwater and 80% of deforestation and habitat loss in tropical areas. So it is no exaggeration to say that how farmers produce our food could make or break life as we know it on the planet. At the same time, farmers are suffering from extreme weather events like drought and flooding, and scientists warn that these climate impacts will only get worse unless we take steps to boost their resilience. In the latest issue of The Ethical Corporation magazine we look at what regenerative agriculture is in critical commodities such as coffee, cocoa, palm oil and soy. And we ask what will it take to bring about this needed revolution in our food system.

Sweeping global study charts a path forward for climate-resilient agriculture
Around the world, research on climate change and agriculture has revealed a complex two-way relationship. Global agriculture is a major driver of climate change, extinctions and pollution, and its influence on the environment is growing. At the same time, the flooding, droughts, and extreme temperatures resulting from climate change are beginning to threaten global food production.

Building a resilient agricultural portfolio: Five issues investors can't miss
The focus on agriculture is intensifying ahead of COP30, presenting opportunities for investors, writes Max Boucher.
Environmental Finance carries a commentary from Max Boucher of the FAIRR Initiative, who argues that in the lead-up to COP30, investors need to take full advantage of these opportunities to encourage a transition to a food system that works in harmony with climate and nature and stay attuned to proposals - such as the proposed JBS IPO – that could limit shareholder influence. "Of the risks and opportunities discussed here, governance may be the area where investors have the most impact through their influence, and an area that will affect how corporate ambitions translate to sustainable change, from deforestation to regenerative agriculture and just transition," he concludes.

* Plant cover and microbial abundances and activities were higher in amended plots.
* Microbial taxonomy and functionality barely changed with treatments.
* Differences in SOM and microbiomes between amendment types were not detected.
