Soil Carbon 4 per 1000, a decade of soil health enhancement - Dr. Beverley Henry - Dr. Jagdish Ladha - Dr. Lydie-Stella Koutika - Dr. Adesola Olaleye
The 4per1000 initiative launched at UNFCCC COP21 by France under the Lima-Paris Action Plan envisions worldwide healthy, carbon-rich soils to mitigate climate change, adapt to its impacts, and ensure food security.
This special issue calls for studies on soil carbon in enhancing soil functions, especially understanding what is possible, what is needed, and what is likely to be successful.
It also calls for studies on regenerative agricultural practices that enhance soil health and carbon sequestration. It seeks studies that document an enabling environment for change at all levels and across the entire value chain.

En 2023, les surfaces certifiées ont reculé de 2% et ramené le taux de SAU bio à 10,36% contre 10,50% en 2022. Le chiffre marque un premier accroc dans l’histoire de la bio, habituée ces dernières années à des taux de croissance à deux chiffres, avant que la crise inflationniste, la faiblesse de la commande publique ou encore la profusion-confusion de labels ne viennent saper la dynamique, ce à quoi il faut ajouter la communication lilliputienne. Mais la bio reste un vecteur d’attractivité du métier pour 4 candidats sur 10. Et le nombre de fermes bio continue d’augmenter et la souveraineté de progresser.

The Shift Project lance un projet visant à imaginer la transformation du système agricole français pour répondre aux contraintes physiques qui le conditionnent, et instruire les enjeux socio-économiques que ces problématiques soulèvent. Ce premier projet devrait se poursuivre dans un deuxième temps par une réflexion « Alimentation » plus large, intégrant le système agroalimentaire et toutes les dimensions « de la fourche à la fourchette ». Cette réflexion s’inscrit elle-même dans un programme « Biomasse » plus vaste.
Le rapport intermédiaire de ce projet a été présenté lors d’un webinaire le 6 juin.

Pour limiter le réchauffement climatique à 1,5 °C conformément à l'accord de Paris, il est impératif de réduire de manière drastique les émissions de CO2, et également de retirer entre 7 et 9 milliards de tonnes de CO2 par an de l'atmosphère d'ici 2050. Global projections of macroeconomic climate-change damages typically consider impacts from average annual and national temperatures over long time horizons. Here we use recent empirical findings from more than 1,600 regions worldwide over the past 40 years to project sub-national damages from temperature and precipitation, including daily variability and extremes7,8. Using an empirical approach that provides a robust lower bound on the persistence of impacts on economic growth, we find that the world economy is committed to an income reduction of 19% within the next 26 years independent of future emission choices (relative to a baseline without climate impacts, likely range of 11–29% accounting for physical climate and empirical uncertainty). These damages already outweigh the mitigation costs required to limit global warming to 2 °C by sixfold over this near-term time frame and thereafter diverge strongly dependent on emission choices. Committed damages arise predominantly through changes in average temperature, but accounting for further climatic components raises estimates by approximately 50% and leads to stronger regional heterogeneity. Committed losses are projected for all regions except those at very high latitudes, at which reductions in temperature variability bring benefits. The largest losses are committed at lower latitudes in regions with lower cumulative historical emissions and lower present-day income.

A unifying modelling of multiple land degradation pathways in Europe - Remus Prăvălie and all
Land degradation is a complex socio-environmental threat, which generally occurs as multiple concurrent pathways that remain largely unexplored in Europe. Here we present an unprecedented analysis of land multi-degradation in 40 continental countries, using twelve dataset-based processes that were modelled as land degradation convergence and combination pathways in Europe’s agricultural (and arable) environments. Using a Land Multi-degradation Index, we find that up to 27%, 35% and 22% of continental agricultural (~2 million km2) and arable (~1.1 million km2) lands are currently threatened by one, two, and three drivers of degradation, while 10–11% of pan-European agricultural/arable landscapes are cumulatively affected by four and at least five concurrent processes. We also explore the complex pattern of spatially interacting processes, emphasizing the major combinations of land degradation pathways across continental and national boundaries. Our results will enable policymakers to develop knowledge-based strategies for land degradation mitigation and other critical European sustainable development goals.
