In Senegal, rice intensification helps farmers grow more with less
* To fight food insecurity and climate change, Senegal is increasingly employing a relatively new strategy for growing rice, known as the “system of rice intensification” (SRI).
* Developed in Madagascar in the 1960s, this method of growing rice intentionally stresses the plants, which allows the farmer to use less water, improves soil fertility, decreases methane emissions, and, most importantly, increases yields.
* Critics of the method say it’s more a list of principles than set rules, with some farmers also turning to herbicides to deal with weeding.
* Still, the method has been scientifically shown to provide numerous benefits for growing rice in drier climates.

Un an après la COP15, à Abidjan, des politiques et scientifiques du Ghana, du Cameroun ou encore Sénégal se sont réunis pendant deux jours dans la capitale économique ivoirienne pour plancher sur les solutions afin de gérer durablement la fertilité des sols forestiers. Parmi les alternatives évoquées, figure l’agroforesterie, qui permet d’associer des arbres et des cultures agricoles sur une même parcelle. En Côte d’Ivoire, où près de 80% du couvert forestier a disparu à cause de la culture du cacao, cette expérience pourrait bien améliorer les pratiques culturales.

Résumé
This document aims to guide the design, implementation, and use of studies to value the benefits and costs of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) for climate resilience projects. Reliable quantification of the costs and benefits of NBS for climate resilience can facilitate further mainstreaming of these interventions by articulating the value proposition of NBS across sectors, improve impact evaluation, and for identifying additional funding and financing for projects. This report provides an overview of methods and approaches, along with a decision framework to guide the design of NBS cost and benefit assessment. The decision framework presented should enable project developers to come up with a cost-effective approach for quantifying the benefits and costs of NBS that is effective and convincing in the context of climate resilience projects. To illustrate this in practical applications, eight case studies from World Bank projects are also included to better show how different valuation methods are applied in the field.

Afrique de l’Est – Plus de 28 millions de personnes (hors Ethiopie) en situation de crise alimentaire IPC3 et +. La situation est d’autant plus critique pour 130 000 d’entre eux au Soudan du Sud et en Somalie, qui sont en état de risque de famine IPC5. A ces chiffres, il convient d’ajouter 20 millions de personnes ciblées pour l’assistance alimentaire en Ethiopie. Cette situation de crise s’explique principalement par une augmentation des populations déplacées dues aux fortes sécheresses qui ont frappé la région, et qui a notamment entrainé la perte de près de 9,4 millions de têtes de bétail au Kenya et en Ethiopie, réduisant la source principale de revenus de ces populations. Dans le même temps, l’aide humanitaire ne parvient pas toujours à atteindre les populations les plus précaires, mais son intensification dans les différentes régions d’Afrique de l’Est reste cruciale pour répondre aux besoins vitaux des populations, dans un contexte désormais amplifié par le conflit au Soudan. Kenya – Suite aux épisodes de sécheresse, les achats de denrées alimentaires ont grimpé de 18 % en 2022. Confronté à l’un des pires épisodes de sécheresse de son histoire qui met à mal l’ensemble de son secteur agricole, le Kenya a vu ses importations de produits agricoles et alimentaires exploser afin de couvrir les besoins alimentaires du pays. D’après l’Agence de presse kényane (KNA), celles-ci ont totalisé en 2022 184 Mds KES soit 1,4 Md USD. Les importations sont dominées par le blé (30% des dépenses), suivi par le riz, le maïs et le sucre blanc. Dominique Menjo, conseiller en sécurité alimentaire du président explique ainsi : « Nous importons actuellement 84% du riz consommé localement et plus de 90% des huiles alimentaires », avant d’ajouter que « le gouvernement cherche à stimuler la production locale de ces denrées pour réduire la facture des achats alimentaires du pays ». Ethiopie – L’UE et AFD mobilisent 32 M€ pour soutenir la sécurité alimentaire du pays. Le conflit dans les régions du Tigré, d’Amhara et de l’Afar combiné aux importantes sécheresses dont a souffert le sud du pays placent près de 20 millions de personnes dans une situation de précarité alimentaire. Afin de relancer la production et de réhabiliter les infrastructures agricoles du pays, l’AFD et l’UE ont mobilisé respectivement 18 M€ et 14 M€ pour financer le projet Food Security and Agriculture Rehabilitation Measures in Conflict-Affected Regions in Ethiopia (FARM). Le projet, qui aidera près de 533 000 ménages, vise à apporter dans un premier temps une aide agricole d’urgence (semences améliorées, races améliorées de volailles et de petits ruminants, pompes d’irrigation, …) mais également à soutenir la filière semences sur le long terme afin de réduire la dépendance du pays aux importations. The global contribution of soil mosses to ecosystem services - Eldrige and all
Soil mosses are among the most widely distributed organisms on land. Experiments and observations suggest that they contribute to terrestrial soil biodiversity and function, yet their ecological contribution to soil has never been assessed globally under natural conditions. Here we conducted the most comprehensive global standardized field study to quantify how soil mosses influence 8 ecosystem services associated with 24 soil biodiversity and functional attributes across wide environmental gradients from all continents. We found that soil mosses are associated with greater carbon sequestration, pool sizes for key nutrients and organic matter decomposition rates but a lower proportion of soil-borne plant pathogens than unvegetated soils. Mosses are especially important for supporting multiple ecosystem services where vascular-plant cover is low. Globally, soil mosses potentially support 6.43 Gt more carbon in the soil layer than do bare soils. The amount of soil carbon associated with mosses is up to six times the annual global carbon emissions from any altered land use globally. The largest positive contribution of mosses to soils occurs under a high cover of mat and turf mosses, in less-productive ecosystems and on sandy and salty soils. Our results highlight the contribution of mosses to soil life and functions and the need to conserve these important organisms to support healthy soils.
