Les champignons du sol
Les sols abritent des communautés vivantes d’une très grande diversité : des micro-organismes, bactéries et champignons qui sont essentiels à l’équilibre écologique et climatique.
Saviez-vous qu’une seule poignée de terre peut héberger des centaines d’espèces de champignons ? Bien que largement invisible et inaccessible, la biodiversité présente dans les sols est immense !
Les chercheurs spécialistes de l’écologie microbienne rattachée à l’INRAE Bourgogne Franche-Comté ont inventorié les champignons des sols grâce aux techniques de séquençage génétique.
Cet Atlas français des champignons du sol permet de faire un état des lieux de la diversité fongique dans les sols de France, le rôle des réseaux mycéliens dans les différents types de sols et l’influence des conditions écologiques et de l’utilisation des sols par l’homme.

L’agriculture régénératrice a pour objectif de renforcer naturellement la qualité des sols et de restaurer la fertilité de terres épuisées. Doux rêve ou projet réaliste ? Ce documentaire suit les initiatives de deux agriculteurs hollandais passionnés et dévoile la vie foisonnante du sol.
En Hollande, Marc van Will et Folkert Botma cherchent à prouver que l’agriculture peut être à la fois régénératrice et productive. Pendant deux ans, Marc et son petit collectif de citadins ont travaillé une parcelle de terre appauvrie jusqu’à ce qu’elle soit entièrement revitalisée. Quant à Folkert, il dirige une exploitation agricole où les animaux enrichissent directement les sols de ses cultures en bandes. L’objectif : la mise en place d’un cercle vertueux où les hommes bénéficieront de récoltes abondantes et saines tout en transmettant aux générations futures des terres régénérées grâce à une étroite collaboration avec la nature et ses micro-organismes.

The world will need effective governmental policies — called agro-environmental policies — and innovations in sustainable food technologies if we want to reduce these impacts while feeding 9 or 10 billion people.

Afforestation is a major carbon dioxide removal technology but can negatively affect food and land systems. Here, we used an integrated assessment model to quantitatively demonstrate how the selection of forest type to use in afforestation could increase global carbon sequestration without compromising global food and land sustainability. Our findings indicate that if a carbon-intensive forest type is selected, afforestation would increase carbon sequestration by 25% compared to the level assuming the native forest type. At the same time, if implemented inappropriately at a large scale, afforestation would worsen the economy, food, and land systems due to decreased land efficiency in carbon removal compared to bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, leading to increased land expansion for carbon removal, higher food prices, and increased risk of hunger. These results suggest the need to implement carbon-intensive forest types with complementary measures to reduce the adverse impacts on food and land sustainability.

Forest soils harbor hyper-diverse microbial communities which fundamentally regulate carbon and nutrient cycling across the globe. Directly testing hypotheses on how microbiome diversity is linked to forest carbon storage has been difficult, due to a lack of paired data on microbiome diversity and in situ observations of forest carbon accumulation and storage. Here, we investigated the relationship between soil microbiomes and forest carbon across 238 forest inventory plots spanning 15 European countries. We show that the composition and diversity of fungal, but not bacterial, species is tightly coupled to both forest biotic conditions and a seven-fold variation in tree growth rates and biomass carbon stocks when controlling for the effects of dominant tree type, climate, and other environmental factors. This linkage is particularly strong for symbiotic endophytic and ectomycorrhizal fungi known to directly facilitate tree growth. Since tree growth rates in this system are closely and positively correlated with belowground soil carbon stocks, we conclude that fungal composition is a strong predictor of overall forest carbon storage across the European continent.
