4 pour 1000 | Les sols pour la sécurité alimentaire et le climat
Les activités humaines émettent d'énormes quantité de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) dans l'atmosphère, ce qui renforce l'effet de serre et accélère le changement climatique. Les sols mondiaux contiennent 2 à 3 fois plus de carbone que l'atmosphère. Augmenter ce stock de carbone de 4 pour 1000 (0.4%) par an dans les 30-40 premiers centimètres du sol, permettrait de stopper l'augmentation de la quantité de CO2 dans l'atmosphère. C'est ce que propose l'initiative 4 pour 1000, les sols pour la sécurité alimentaire et le climat.

La séquestration du carbone dans les sols français
L'initiative «4 pour 1000», lancée par la France lors de la COP-21 de 2015, vise à augmenter le stock de carbone dans les sols mondiaux de 0,4 % par an. Cette augmentation permettrait de compenser les émissions annuelles de CO2 dues aux activités humaines. Cet article est issu d'une étude menée par l'INRAE en 2020 intitulée « Stocker du carbone dans les sols français : Quel potentiel au regard de l'objectif 4 pour 1000 et à quel coût ? » disponible en plusieurs versions.

À l’approche du Salon de l’agriculture et alors que la tension dans le monde agricole est toujours palpable, le Sénat devrait adopter mardi, la loi d'orientation pour la souveraineté agricole et le renouvellement des générations en agriculture.
Dans son 4ème rapport sur l’état des terres agricoles en France publié lundi 17 février, Terre de Liens révèle que la France a perdu la capacité à nourrir sa population. En l’état, la nouvelle Loi qui devrait être adoptée ne devrait qu’aggraver 75 ans de déconnexion politique entre agriculture et alimentation.

By 2025, Parties will have to submit to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change a new or updated nationally determined contribution (NDC), with more ambitious climate commitments as compared to the previous one. It is thus expected that Parties will raise their ambitions regarding their actions on GHG emissions reductions and carbon removal, thus on biomass and soil carbon stocks. This study aims to understand how soils and their management practices are integrated into the NDCs, and how this information might be used to quantify climate change mitigation potential. This study showed that although some actions have a sufficient level of information to allow for the quantification of their climate change mitigation potential, including by carbon stocks (biomass and soil), few Parties actually include this information in their NDCs. However, this study also provided some examples of quantification using the Nationally Determined Contribution Expert tool (NEXT) in ex-ante analyses. This type of analyses is considered to be a starting point for discussions and collaboration between policy makers and technical experts involved in formulating the NDC and developing national GHG inventories. Ex-ante GHG emission analyses are essential for improving data collection, strengthening credibility and feasibility, and paving the way for enhancing environmental ambitions and building countries' capacities.

Pesticides have negative effects on non-target organisms - Nian-Feng Wan and all
Pesticides affect a diverse range of non-target species and may be linked to global biodiversity loss. The magnitude of this hazard remains only partially understood. We present a synthesis of pesticide (insecticide, herbicide and fungicide) impacts on multiple non-target organisms across trophic levels based on 20,212 effect sizes from 1,705 studies. For non-target plants, animals (invertebrate and vertebrates) and microorganisms (bacteria and fungi), we show negative responses of the growth, reproduction, behaviour and other physiological biomarkers within terrestrial and aquatic systems. Pesticides formulated for specific taxa negatively affected non-target groups, e.g. insecticidal neonicotinoids affecting amphibians. Negative effects were more pronounced in temperate than tropical regions but were consistent between aquatic and terrestrial environments, even after correcting for field-realistic terrestrial and environmentally relevant exposure scenarios. Our results question the sustainability of current pesticide use and support the need for enhanced risk assessments to reduce risks to biodiversity and ecosystems.

The Food System countdown - 2024 Tracking Progress and Managing Interactions
The Food Systems Countdown Initiative (FSCI) was established to provide both decision-makers and us, ordinary people, with a set of indicators to track how well (or badly) our food systems are doing.
There are a total of 50 indicators under five themes: diets, nutrition, and health; environment, production, and natural resources; livelihoods, poverty, and equity; governance; and resilience.
The initiative involves more than 50 researchers from all over the world and it is the first science-based - and so far the most comprehensive - monitoring of our food systems.
