‘The Guardian shares insights from a new report that finds protecting natural ecosystems and preventing future spread of zoonotic diseases and pandemics would cost about $20 billion a year, just 10% of the annual economic damage caused by zoonoses and 5% of the value of the lives lost. Their analysis finds 3 million people die from zoonotic diseases on average every year and creating a significant drain on the global economy that could be negated cheaply by conserving natural spaces. The scientists heavily criticise approaches by global bodies and governments that focus only on preventing the spread of new viruses once they have infected humans, rather than tackling the root causes as well. The meeting “emphasised” the role that healthy soils play in protecting the climate, and the ministers also agreed to “avoid further soil degradation by promoting agroecological” and other sustainable farming practices. EurActiv noted that the resulting plan is aligned with the “key priorities” that the EU has set, including its flagship soil strategy, “which has outlined plans for a soil health law by 2023 to bring soil on the same legal footing as air and water”.’ [source CarbonBrief.org]

Le secteur agricole kenyan pourrait perdre plus de 1,2 Mds € si l'interdiction d'utiliser des produits phytosanitaires entrait en vigueur, c’est ce qu’affirme l'Institut Tegemeo de recherche et de politique, basé à l'Université d’Egerton au Kenya. L'Assemblée nationale pourrait en effet envisager d’aligner la réglementation sur les produits phytosanitaires avec le Green Deal européen. Cela pourrait ainsi conduire à l’interdiction de nombreux produits phytosanitaires. Si ces dispositions pouvaient aider les producteurs désireux d'exporter vers l'UE, elles pourraient poser de nombreux problèmes aux petits producteurs représentant jusqu’à 90% de la production en produits frais. Alors que la crise COVID a eu pour effet de concentrer les efforts sur le renforcement de la sécurité alimentaire du pays, l’interdiction de certains produits phytosanitaires fait nécessairement débat quant à son effet sur la production nationale et la concurrence des importations. De plus en plus contesté, même par les économistes classiques, l’indicateur de croissance phare, le PIB, utilisé notamment pour construire la loi de finance, pourrait être détrôné. Outre-Rhin, le ministre de l'Économie et du climat veut ajouter une trentaine de nouveaux indicateurs pour apprécier plus finement l’état du pays et ainsi optimiser les investissements pour atteindre bien-être et neutralité carbone. - A new issue brief evaluates the public incentives of six Latin American countries and calculates how much they pay farmers and other landholders that restore land. For each program, this brief calculated the total payment in 2021 US dollars that each landholder receives for growing a single tree or conserve a single hectare of forest.

Using “multiple large ensemble simulations of high-emissions scenarios” in 10 global regions over the northern-hemisphere summer, the researchers project that the probability of compound droughts increases by 40-60% by the middle to late part of this century, with the greatest risk in North America and the Amazon. GreenBiz covers the launch of the Science-Based Targets initiative new draft guidance for forests, land and agriculture (FLAG) to aid companies in this sector establish legitimate ways to reduce the carbon footprint of their operations and supply chains. The FLAG guidance will likely be launched in March. In the following six months, its use will be voluntary. After that, all companies that fall within this sector will have to set FLAG-specific targets. This will become an additional component to the existing SBTi process, which means that companies will end up having two sets of targets — one for their land-related emissions and one for all others. Setting a zero-deforestation commitment will become a prerequisite for FLAG science-based targets. This essentially requires all food and ag companies to eliminate deforestation in their supply chains if they want to get SBTi endorsement. [source Nature4Climate]

- Corporate strategies that force cocoa farmers to stay in place to increase productivity amid the impacts of climate change are putting smallholders at greater risk to economic and environmental impacts, a new study says.
- The study analyzed efforts supported or carried out by Mars Inc., one of the world’s largest chocolate manufacturers and cocoa buyers, in Indonesia, which produces a tenth of the world’s cocoa.
- “Many agricultural intensification initiatives assume that by boosting productivity, smallholder incomes will increase, and therefore vulnerability to climate shocks will decrease. Yet, the reality is much more complicated,” says study author Sean Kennedy.
- “When some entity is saying, ‘Here’s a climate-adaptation program intended to keep people in place,’ often staying in place is not the best way to adapt to climate change,” he adds.

The Peoples Forests Partnership, launched in November 2021 at COP-26, seeks to mobilize long-term, private corporate contractual financial flows to community-based forest conservation projects, and provide a platform for Indigenous Peoples, traditional owners, and local communities, as well as corporates, NGOs, climate financiers, forest governments, donors, members of the public, and all willing stakeholders to work together to drive direct financing to forest communities for climate and biodiversity. Currently, the Peoples Forests Partnership is holding a public consultation on its membership criteria and operating principles, as well as inviting expressions of interest in becoming a member.
