Sols - Vie - Etude

Developing an Ad Hominem typology for classifying climate misinformation - Sergei A. Samoilenko & John Cook

A new research paper in Climate Policy has created “an original codebook for classifying ad hominem arguments made by climate contrarians”, drawing on 55 contrarian blogs and 15 conservative thinktank websites published between 2008 and 2020 [source CarbonBrief].

Key Policy Insights

* Climate misinformation politicizes climate science, further amplifying ideological conflict and fostering ideological polarization;

* Climate misinformation campaigns feature a range of different types of ad hominem attacks designed to undermine the credibility of climate scientists;

* The most common type of ad hominem attack on climate scientists in our sample was bias attacks, which entail accusing climate scientists of political partisanship or of having an ideological agenda;

* Attacks on the moral character of climate scientists were the only type of ad hominem that increased during the period under study (2008–2020);

* Different types of ad hominems often appeared together, with the most common combination being bias and moral attacks;

* Ad hominem attacks on climate scientists are part of misinformation campaigns designed to stall discussion on climate change and delay the implementation of climate policies. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/14693062.2023.2245792?journalCode=tcpo20

Enumerating soil biodiversity - Mark A. Anthony, S. Franz Bender and Marcel G. A. van der Heijden

Soil organisms mediate unique functions we rely on for food, fiber, and human and planetary health. Despite the significance of soil life, we lack a quantitative estimate of soil biodiversity, making it challenging to advocate for the importance of protecting, preserving, and restoring soil life. Here, we show that soil is likely home to 59% of life including everything from microbes to mammals, making it the singular most biodiverse habitat on Earth. Our enumeration can enable stakeholders to more quantitatively advocate for soils in the face of the biodiversity crisis.

Irrigated barley–grass pea crop mixtures can revive soil microbial activities and alleviate salinity in desertic conditions of southern Morocco - Dennis S. Ashilenje, Erick Amombo, Abdelaziz Hirich, Krishna P. Devkota, Lamfeddal Kouisni & Abdelaziz Nilahyane

Abstract

Soil salinity adversely limits crop and soil health, and this can be reversed by cropping systems where species exclude salts and activate microbial nutrient cycling. A randomized complete block design experiment was established in Laayoune–Morocco to evaluate the influence of irrigated grass pea and barley monocrops or combined together in 50–50% and 70–30% mixtures against soil salinity and CO2-C flux in sites with varying salinity. Site by treatment interaction significantly influenced (p < 0.05) soil salinity and CO2-C flux. Salinity reduced by 37 to 68 dS m−1 in highly saline soils across season regardless of treatment and barley monocrop retained the least salinity (15 dS m−1). Same applied to sites with low (1 to 2 dS m−1) and medium (2 to 5 dS m−1) salinity although less pronounced. The 70–30% grass pea, barley mixture maintained the greatest CO2-C flux in soils with low salinity and marginally enhancing soil active carbon (130 to 229 mg kg−1 soil) in different sites. Increasingly saline water filled pore space devastated CO2-C flux, although this process recovered under barley at extreme salinity. Overall, barley in mixture with grass pea can alleviate salinity and accelerate microbial carbon sequestration if irrigation is modulated in shallow desertic soils.

4 per 1000 – can it be done?

The world’s soils contain 2 to 3 times more carbon than the world’s atmosphere, and have huge potential for carbon storage. The “4 per 1000” initiative, launched by France in December 2015 at COP 21, estimates that if the amount of soil organic carbon (SOC) in the top 30-40 cm of the world’s soils could be increased by just 4 parts per thousand per year, this would nearly compensate for the annual global increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

* In the uplands of the Philippines’ Iloilo province, Indigenous Suludnon farmers maintain deep connections to the agroecosystem that has sustained their community for generations.

* Agroforestry systems and diversified planting have helped the Suludnon cope with a changing climate, and traditional knowledge of natural signs of hazardous weather have allowed them to prepare for storms.

* However, with climate change bringing increasingly frequent extreme weather events, along with crop pests and disease, the Suludnon’s time-refined methods are coming under strain.

Agricultural Carbon Programs: From Chaos to Systems Change

In this white paper, American Farmland Trust (AFT) and Sierra View Solutions (SVS) analyze the current state of agricultural carbon programs, explore four main reasons why farmer participation may be low, and recommend 12 strategic changes that would help these programs, which are mainly focused on cropland, to succeed. The most critical barriers AFT and SVS identify are the economics of the programs, concerns about additionality, requirements for permanence, and data and technology barriers for agriculture.

This analysis may be used to help farm trade associations, environmental groups, carbon program developers, and policymakers better understand some of the specific barriers to enrollment that agriculture faces and the changes that could lead to widespread adoption of farm conservation practices. If implemented, the recommendations may lead to systemic change that will transform agriculture from a source of greenhouse gas emissions to a sink. They may also provide the public and producers with the assurance that the emerging agricultural carbon programs are a credible and cost-effective approach to climate mitigation and adaptation.

‘UNPRECEDENTED’: Down to Earth reported that “1-10 July was a record-breaking period” for rainfall across several Indian states, with some “exceeding the normal by 61% going up to 10,000%”. Flash floods and landslides killed at least 20 people in Himachal Pradesh, said the Hindustan Times. India’s capital Delhi has seen “unprecedented flooding”, according to the Indian Express, with the Yamuna river reaching the highest level on record, prompting mass evacuations and causing havoc with water supplies. By Leo Hickman, Carbon Brief’s editor in Hampshire, England

CERBERUS: A lingering heatwave across southern Europe is set to “intensify next week and could break the 48.8C record for Europe’s top temperature”, said the Times. Dubbed “Cerberus” after the three-headed dog of Greek mythology, the heatwave saw the Italian health ministry announce yesterday an "extreme" health warning for 15 cities, including Rome, Bologna and Florence, reported Sky News. Drought and wildfires are affecting countries including Poland, Croatia, Greece and Spain. By Leo Hickman, Carbon Brief’s editor in Hampshire, England

INTENSIFYING: In the US, Axios said earlier today that an “expanding, intensifying heatwave prompted the National Weather Service to issue heat alerts for 115 million people on Friday in 15 states”. Southern states, from California and Arizona through to Texas and Florida, have all experienced extreme and sustained high temperatures. Meanwhile, the New York Times said that extreme flooding across north-eastern states – particularly Vermont where up to 23cm of rain fell in two days last weekend – showed the “limits of America’s efforts to adapt to climate change”. Sounds of the soil: A new tool for conservation?

* Researchers are discovering that listening to the soil can be a way to understand biodiversity belowground without having to overturn every bit of the land.

* Studies have shown that soils of restored forest areas have both more complex sounds and more critters than soils of degraded sites.

* Soils of intensively managed agricultural lands, also appear to be quieter, indicating that soil sounds could be a proxy for soil health.

* Some researchers are also using sounds to identify distinct species in the soil, which could open up lots of possibilities for both pest management and wildlife conservation.

Soil - Soil carbon capture - Microbes - Role - Study

June 27, 2023

Microbes play leading role in soil carbon capture, study shows

* Soil is a significant carbon reservoir, storing more carbon than all plants, animals and the atmosphere combined, making it crucial for addressing the climate crisis.

* Microbes, such as bacteria and fungi, are the primary drivers of carbon storage in soil, surpassing other soil processes by a factor of four, according to a new study in Nature.

* The efficiency of microbial metabolism plays a vital role in determining the amount of organic carbon stored in soils worldwide, according to the research, which also calls for improved soil carbon models for effective policies and climate solutions.

* Enhancing microbial efficiency can lead to increased carbon storage in soils, but further research is needed to understand how to achieve this.

Agroecology schools help communities restore degraded land in Guatemala

* The transformation of ancestral lands into intensive monoculture plantations has led to the destruction of Guatemala’s native forests and traditional practices, as well as loss of livelihoods and damage to local health and the environment.

* A network of more than 40 Indigenous and local communities and farmer associations are developing agroecology schools across the country to promote the recovery of ancestral practices, educate communities on agroecology and teach them how to build their own local economies.

* Based on the traditional “campesino a campesino” (from farmer to farmer) method, the organizations says it has improved the livelihoods of 33,000 families who use only organic farming techniques and collectively protect 74,000 hectares (182,858 acres) of forest across Guatemala.

One seed at a time: Lebanese project promotes agroecology for farmer autonomy

* Lebanese organic seed farm Buzuruna Juzuruna is on a mission, part of a growing network of agroecological efforts in the country, to change conventional farming through seed sharing and communal education.

* Despite its location in the Fertile Crescent, Lebanon today relies heavily on imports to feed its population due to economic collapse, conflicts and political upheaval.

* Buzuruna Juzuruna is using multiple efforts, including free classes, festivals and even circus performances to expose local farmers to older, more ecological methods of farming.

* In its work, Buzuruna Juzuruna emulates the ecosystems it treasures, by being open-source and horizontal in design.

July 12, 2023

Euronews covers the latest vote on the EU Nature Restoration Law today which resulted in 336 votes in favour of the amended law and 300 against, with 13 abstention in the European Parliament. The outcome means the regulation will be sent back to the European Parliament's environment committee, where it had been previously voted down. If the committee moves it forward, the European Parliament will be able to enter negotiations with member states, which have already established a common position on the file, to fine-tune the provisions and craft a compromise text that could then be endorsed by both co-legislators. The regulation establishes binding targets in seven fields of action, such as farmlands, peatlands, pollinators and sea bottoms, with the goal of reversing the environmental damage caused by unchecked human activity and climate change. EU - Commission - New EU Green Deal - Soil

July 8, 2023

Commission tables new EU Green Deal package focusing on soil, waste and new genomic techniques
The European Commission presented on July 5th its Green Deal package called “sustainable use of plant and soil natural resources”, which contains four different proposals.
The latest array of laws, which not only aims are making sustainable use of key natural resources the norm, but also strengthening the resilience of EU food systems and farming, includes: the Directive on soil monitoring, the Regulation on plants produced by new genomic techniques, the Revision of food waste and textile aspects of the waste framework directive, and the Revision of legislation on seeds and other plant and forest reproductive material.
Soil monitoring law: the objective of the new soil directive is to create a monitoring framework for all soils in Europe. It also aims at making sustainable management of soils the norm, by setting a list of practices to be used in EU countries, as well as requesting them to identify, investigate and remediate potentially contaminated sites.
Food waste proposal: According to the adopted text, Member States are required to take the necessary measures to reduce food waste by the end of 2030 by 10%, in processing and manufacturing, and by 30% (per capita), jointly at retail and consumption (restaurants, food services and households) compared to 2020 levels.
