Electrostatic coupling and water bridging in adsorption hierarchy of biomolecules at water–clay interfaces - Jiaxing Wang, Rebecca S. Wilson, and Ludmilla Aristilde
The storage of biomolecules derived from plants and microbes in soils represents an important reservoir at the interface of carbon sequestration and biogeochemical carbon cycling. Association with clay minerals controls the residence time of these biomolecules in soils in semi-arid and temperate climates, by influencing accessibility to microbial turnover. Here, we combine experiments and molecular modeling to investigate biomolecule–clay complexes serving as precursors to soil organic matter. We obtain adsorbate structures and binding energies to reveal electrostatic and water-bridging interactions that drive the adsorption and nanopore trapping of chemically diverse biomolecules within smectite-type clays. These findings advance a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms critical to the role of clays in organic matter retention in different soil conditions.

Soil organic carbon losses with lateral transfer to the oceans
A spatially distributed model coupling erosion, transport, and deposition to the carbon cycle was developed and published in this relevant paper. Then, it was used to simulate the impact of Cover Crops (CC) on both erosion and carbon, to show that cover crops can simultaneously increase organic carbon storage and reduce particulate organic carbon export to the oceans. The same study focused on the increase in SOC storage and the export of particulate organic carbon (POC) to the oceans, compiling a continental-scale carbon budget. The results indicated that Europe exported 1.95 TgC/year of POC to the oceans in the last decade. Results show that CC adoption can reduce the annual export while increasing SOC storage. In a scenario of widespread adoption, CCs alone are insufficient to achieve the 4‰ target. Download the data:

L'oxydation de la matière organique fossile des roches, la "géo-respiration", est un processus majeur qui libère du CO2 dans l'atmosphère et influence le climat aux longues échelles de temps. Deux études récentes, publiées respectivement dans PNAS et Nature, ont permis de déterminer que cette géo-respiration libère autant de CO2 que les volcans à l'échelle globale, et que les flux sont les plus importants dans les chaines de montagnes et dans leurs plaines d'inondation associées. Ces résultats changent ainsi profondément notre compréhension du cycle géologique du carbone.

Carbon sequestration in grasslands has been proposed as an important means to offset greenhouse gas emissions from ruminant systems. To understand the potential and limitations of this strategy, we need to acknowledge that soil carbon sequestration is a time-limited benefit, and there are intrinsic differences between short- and long-lived greenhouse gases. Here, our analysis shows that one tonne of carbon sequestrated can offset radiative forcing of a continuous emission of 0.99 kg methane or 0.1 kg nitrous oxide per year over 100 years. About 135 gigatonnes of carbon is required to offset the continuous methane and nitrous oxide emissions from ruminant sector worldwide, nearly twice the current global carbon stock in managed grasslands. For various regions, grassland carbon stocks would need to increase by approximately 25% − 2,000%, indicating that solely relying on carbon sequestration in grasslands to offset warming effect of emissions from current ruminant systems is not feasible.

New fund supports Indigenous-led land management in biodiverse area of Bolivia
* A new funding mechanism aims to support the territorial land management visions of four Indigenous groups in the region, including the Tacana, Lecos, T’simane Mosetene and San José de Uchupiamonas Indigenous peoples, who also contributed to the creation of this fund, along with the Regional Organization of Indigenous People of La Paz (CPILAP).
* The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) launched the new funding mechanism, in collaboration with Bolivia’s Foundation for the Development of the National System of Protected Areas (FUNDESNAP); the new mechanism will channel conservation funds to Indigenous organizations in the Madidi Landscape.
* The Madidi Landscape is one of the most biodiverse terrestrial protected areas in the world, where scientists have recorded the most plant, butterfly, bird and mammal species.
* The new fund, announced Oct. 30, has so far attracted $650,000 in initial support from the Bezos Earth Fund.
